HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 16 (ACN) Cuba established new regulations on maternity for working women, with the aim of expanding the benefits approved in this matter.
Official Gazette No. 145, published on Wednesday, approves a series of regulations that seek to ensure and facilitate medical care for working women during pregnancy, pre- and post-natal rest, breastfeeding and, for both parents, the care of the child.
It also regulates monetary, economic and social benefits, from 34 weeks of pregnancy or 32 weeks if the pregnancy is multiple, until the child is one year old. It also establishes protection for the father or other working relative who is entrusted with the care of the child in case of the mother’s death.
Likewise, the legal regulation includes the granting of a monetary benefit to the mother or father with sick children or to the grandmother or grandfather who is in charge of their care; granting the right to enjoy the social benefit to grandparents caring for a minor whose mother is a student; and providing for a differentiated treatment when the minor requires special attention.
There will be guarantees for mothers in the state sector, non-state sector and cash benefits for mothers with sick children.
The regulation states that working mothers who are absent from work, whose child up to 17 years of age is sick, are eligible to receive a monetary benefit, upon presentation of the child’s medical certificate.
This amount will be equivalent to 60% of the average salary of the last 12 months; if less than this time has been worked, the salary earned is divided by the months worked.
