HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 15 (ACN) The 19th series of conversations ¨Cuba in the foreign policy of the United States of America¨ was inaugurated this Wednesday at the Higher Institute of International Relations in Havana.
With the theme “Cuba-US: obstacles and opportunities for a sustainable relationship”, the event will be held until December 17 in a hybrid way (face-to-face and by videoconference) and is organized in panels, which are held in the morning.
José Ramón Cabañas Rodríguez, director of the Center for International Policy Research, explained at the opening of the academic event that the afternoon sessions will include interventions on topics that have been partially covered by the media.
He emphasized that they come to this conversation, once again, convinced of the validity of this space as a meeting point, as an area of dialogue that helps to build bridges, to clarify misunderstandings and to project a thought that contributes at some point to a sustainable bilateral relationship.
According to the director, it will be three days of intense debate and transparent academic exchange, in which some of the participants will repeat the experience while others will join for the first time.
Carlos Fernández de Cossío, Director General for the United States of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, made a special intervention at the inauguration of the event in which he thanked those present, on behalf of the organization, for participating in the 19th edition of the series of conversations.
In subsequent statements to the press, he highlighted the value of this scenario for debate, analysis, among academics and intellectuals on the ties between the two nations.
It is important that it is taking place today, he added, at a time when the scenario between Cuba and the United States is not positive in terms of official political relations.
Relations are still formal diplomatic, with few ties, he said.
Our satisfaction is that despite this, relations between Americans and Cubans have continued to increase, and our wish is that they continue to expand as much as possible, despite the determination of the government of that country to hinder it, and that at some point in the future official political ties may also develop, said Fernandez de Cossio..
