HAVANA, Cuba, May 16 (ACN) The first secretary of the Central Committee of the Cuban communist party and president of the country, Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez, described today as historic the approval by the National Assembly of People’s Power (ANPP) of the Criminal Code Law, the Law on Penal Execution and the Law on the Process of Protection of Constitutional Rights.
Cuba continues with the firm purpose of strengthening its status as a socialist state based on the rule of law, the Cuban president said on Twitter.
During the 5th extraordinary session of ANPP, held at the Convention Center, deputies of the Cuban parliament approved the new Criminal Code Law, which responds to the current and future political and socioeconomic conditions of the country.
Ruben Remigio Ferro, president of the People’s Supreme Court (TSP by its acronym in Spanish), presented before the Assembly the 26th version of the bill, which was approved by the representatives. As a result of the broad consultation of the text, 1,140 criteria and 1,114 proposals for modification were received, of which 706 were admitted.
MPs also approved the Law of Penal Execution, as part of the reform process of the Cuban criminal justice system, as well as the Law of the Process of Protection of Constitutional Rights, which establishes a “preferential, expeditious and concentrated” procedure for the courts to hear cases of damages suffered by individuals, caused by State bodies, their directors, officials and employees or by non-State entities.
